Description

HIGHAM FERRERS WOOD STREET SP9668SW (South side) 20/72 Nos.1 and 3 GV II

House, now 2 dwellings. C15, remodelled C18. Squared coursed limestone with asbestos tile roof. Originally open hall now 2 storeys. 4-window range at first floor with 2 horizontal sash windows, with glazing bars, to right and 2 C19 sash windows to left. 2 early C19 sash windows with glazing bars to ground floor. 2 C20 ribbed doors to centre. All openings have wood lintels. Gable parapet and brick stack to left. Interior of No.1 has fine medieval roof structure of 2 bays with central moulded arch-braced truss with carved wooden corbels supporting colonettes. Arched wind braces to each bay. Fragments of C18 moulded cornice to ceiling. Small c17/C18 fireplace with bressumer. The ground floor through-passage has C18 timber framing with brick infilling. Part of a medieval hall, probably sub-divided C17 or C18.
