Description
Nos. 1 and 3 Wood Street is a house, now divided into two dwellings, dating from the 15th century and remodelled in the 18th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone and has an asbestos tile roof. Originally an open hall, it is now two storeys high. The first floor features a four-window range, with two horizontal sash windows with glazing bars on the right and two 19th-century sash windows on the left. The ground floor has two early 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars, and there are two 20th-century ribbed doors in the centre. All openings are topped with wood lintels. The building has a gable parapet and a brick stack on the left side.
Inside No. 1, there is a fine medieval roof structure consisting of two bays, featuring a central moulded arch-braced truss with carved wooden corbels that support colonettes. Each bay has arched wind braces. There are fragments of an 18th-century moulded cornice on the ceiling and a small 17th or 18th-century fireplace with a bressumer. The ground floor through-passage retains 18th-century timber framing with brick infilling, indicating that it is part of a medieval hall that was likely subdivided in the 17th or 18th century.
