Description
The Town Hall, located on Market Square in Higham Ferrers, was built in 1809. Constructed from squared coursed limestone with an ashlar facade and a slate roof, it features a rectangular plan with ancillary offices on the ground floor and a council chamber on the first floor. The symmetrical main facade has three bays, with the central bay projecting slightly and topped by a pediment. The first floor features a central Venetian-style sash window with glazing bars, flanked by gauged stone heads with keyblocks. Two six-panel doors are situated on either side of the central bay, also beneath similar stone heads, and have fanlights with glazing bars. A raised string course runs between the floors. The roof has a shallow gable hidden behind a parapet wall, and the pediment is topped with a ball finial and an oval plaque displaying the Borough insignia. The side elevations each have two bays to both ground and first floors, incorporating sash windows with glazing bars under wooden lintels, as well as some blank openings. The rear elevation presents a two-window range at first floor with sash windows, and a three-window range of 20th-century casement windows at ground floor. Inside, the council chamber is notable for its central plaster moulding and a branch chandelier.
