Description

This is a mid-17th century house located on the west side of Market Square in Higham Ferrers. The building is constructed from squared coursed limestone and has a plain tile roof, designed in a U-shaped layout. It is two storeys high and features a three-window facade. The central entrance has a studded door set within a moulded stone surround, topped with a four-centred arch. Above the door is a two-light stone mullion window. Flanking this are two-storey canted bay windows with six-light stone mullion windows, all featuring leaded lights. A chamfered plinth extends around the cellar opening in the left bay. A continuous hood mould runs above the ground floor windows. The roof projects forward over the bay windows. A brick and stone stack is positioned on the left side, and an ashlar stack with a moulded cornice is at the right end. The rear elevation incorporates a 19th-century addition. The interior, which was not inspected, is said to include ceiling beams and an open fireplace with a bressumer. Noticeable features are some 17th-century door openings, and a 17th-century fireplace with a corbelled lintel in a first-floor room. The central entrance was likely originally a passage leading to a rear courtyard.
