Description
This is a mid-18th century townhouse, now used as three flats, a house, and a shop. It is located on the west side of Market Square in Higham Ferrers. The building is constructed of squared, coursed limestone with ashlar dressings, covered by a roof of Collyweston slate and concrete tiles. It follows a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with an attic.
The facade has an eight-window range, with the central two bays emphasized by a pediment. The first-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars, arranged beneath a continuous raised band. Ground floor windows in the central two bays are sash windows with glazing bars, set within gauged stone surrounds with keyblocks. The two bays to the left of the ground floor have tripartite sash windows with glazing bars, with rendered surrounds. A panelled door, set between the left-hand bays, has a moulded plaster surround. An early 20th-century shop front occupies the three bays on the far right. Rusticated quoins highlight the corners and the bays flanking the central two. A moulded cornice is topped by a parapet with upturned ends. Flat-topped roof dormers have horizontal sliding sash windows. Ashlar gable parapets and stone stacks are present at the ridge and end of the building. An armorial plaque is set within the pediment. The rear elevation features three irregular gables. The interior of number 7 includes a staircase with a stick balustrade.
