Description
This is a milepost located 4 metres south of Newhaven House Hotel, dating from the mid-19th century and manufactured by James Haywood & Sons. It is made of cast iron and features a triangular sectioned base with a shallow sloping top that curves up to form a flat back with a segmental arched head. The south face is inscribed with 'BUXTON/11 MILES' and, in smaller letters below, 'J HAYWOOD JNR,/PHOENIX FOUNDRY,/DERBY'. The north face displays 'ASHBOURNE/9 MILES' with the manufacturer's name repeated below. The top face is inscribed with 'HARTINGTON PARISH', and above that, in larger script, it reads 'LONDON/148 MILES, DERBY/22 MILES'.
