Description

This is a milepost located on the south side of Derby Road in the parish of Brailsford, dating from the early 19th century. It is made of cast iron and has a triangular shape with a sloping upper section that rises to a back plate with a curved top. The milepost is inscribed with the following distances: LONDON 135 MILES, BUXTON 24 MILES, SHIRLEY PARISH 4 MILES, ASHBOURNE 4 MILES, and DERBY 9 MILES. It also bears the name J HAYWOOD JUNR and indicates that it was made at the PHOENIX FOUNDRY in Derby.
