Description
This milepost, located 5 metres south of Newhaven Cottage, dates from the mid-19th century and was manufactured by J Haywood at the Phoenix Foundry in Derby. It is made of cast iron and features a triangular sectioned base with a shallow sloping top that curves up to form a flat back with a segmental arched head. The south face is inscribed with 'BUXTON/10 MILES' and below it, in smaller letters, 'J HAYWOOD JNR,/PHOENIX FOUNDRY,/DERBY'. The north face reads 'ASHBOURNE/10 MILES', with the manufacturer's name repeated below. The top face is inscribed with 'HARTINGTON PARISH', and above this, in larger script, it states 'LONDON/149 MILES,/DERBY/23 MILES'.
