Description

This is a milepost from the mid-19th century, made by J Haywood at the Phoenix Foundry in Derby. It is constructed from cast iron and features a triangular sectioned base with a shallow sloping top that curves up to form a flat back with a segmental arched head. The south face is inscribed with 'BUXTON/9 MILES' and below that, in smaller letters, 'J HAYWOOD JNR/PHOENIX FOUNDRY,/DERBY'. The north face has the inscription 'ASHBOURNE/10 MILES', with the manufacturer's name repeated below. The east face displays 'LONDON/150 MILES/DERBY/24 MILES' in larger script, and on the sloping top, it reads 'HARTINGTON PARISH'.
