Description
This milepost, dating from the mid-19th century, is located 14 metres south of Mount Pleasant Farm. It was manufactured by James Haywood at the Phoenix Foundry in Derby. The milepost is made of cast iron and features a triangular sectioned base with a shallow sloping top that curves up to form a flat back with a segmental arched head. The south face is inscribed with 'BUXTON/12 MILES' and below that, 'J HAYWOOD /PHOENIX WORKS /DERBY'. The north face displays 'ASHBOURNE/8 MILES' along with the manufacturer's name again. The top face is inscribed with 'LONDON/147 MILES/ DERBY / 21 MILES,/HARTINGTON PARISH'. The total height of the milepost is approximately 3½ feet.
