Description

Newhaven House Hotel is a hotel that has been partly converted into flats. It was built in the mid-18th century and around 1795 for the Duke of Devonshire. The building features rendered stone with painted stone dressings and rusticated quoins. It has stone gable end, ridge, and side wall stacks, all adorned with plain decorative bands. The roofs are mostly slate, except for a plain tile porch roof. The front roof is hipped, while the rear roofs have stone coped gables. The building sits on a shallow plinth and has three storeys, higher at the street front and stepping down towards the rear.

The eastern street front has five bays, while the south elevation has eight bays, with the east elevation dating from around 1795. There is a central porch with a broken dentilled pediment above a glazing bar sash set in a plain surround. Doric columned porticos flank the porch. On either side of the porch are pairs of similar sashes, connected by a sill band, with five similar sashes linked above by a plain sill band at the eaves.

The south elevation features a three-sided canted bay to the east, with a glazing bar sash on each face, also tied by a sill band. Above this are similar bands and sashes, with three additional sashes above. To the west, there is a lower three-bay section from the mid-18th century, which has a central glazed door in a plain surround, with plain sashes on either side in painted flush surrounds. Above are three similar windows, with three shallower ones at the eaves. Adjacent to the west is a lower three-storey, two-bay addition in a similar style.

Inside, there is a cantilevered stone staircase from around 1795 that spans three storeys. The interior also includes an oval room with a dentilled cornice, raised and fielded panelled shutters, and a contemporary fireplace with a wood surround decorated with classical motifs and inset Monyash marble sides.
