Description

The Old School House is a former school house located on the north side of Main Street in Whittington. It dates from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. A porch, which used to have a plaque dated 1830, is now illegible. The building features an ashlar facade, with the rest made of coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a stone slate roof and an artificial stone stack.

The main structure is rectangular, with two storeys and an attic, and has a four-windowed facade. The first floor has two-light stone-mullioned casements, while the ground floor features three-light stone-mullioned casements on either side of a projecting porch. The central entrance consists of a four-panelled door with a four-pane hall light above, all within a projecting stone porch that has a simple triangular pediment and a rectangular stone inscription panel.

Additional features include a two-light stone-mullioned garret light and a single-light window with a stone surround in the left gable end. There is also a plank door accessed by seven brick steps in the left wall of a single-storey extension at the rear, which leads to No 2. The main body has flat gable end coping and a stack on the left gable end. The interior has not been inspected.
