Description
Modbury Magpie is a single house located at No 2 on Galpin Street in Modbury. It dates from the 18th century, although it features 19th-century windows. The front wall is slate hung, while the rest of the building is rendered. The front and return slopes have a slate roof, but the wing has an asbestos-cement slate roof. The compact front block has a long wing that extends down the side lane and has a separate roof structure.
The front of the house is two storeys high and has two windows. It features 4-pane sash windows above a canted 15-pane shop front, which has a flat roof with a moulded edge over a shallow fascia. To the left, there is a 19th-century 6-pane door (3 panes above 3 panes) set in pilasters, topped with a glazed gabled hood supported by brackets. A large square chimney stack is located at the hipped return, and there are richly detailed dentilled eaves.
The wing is also two storeys tall and includes a door with a gabled hood at the ground floor, a 12-pane sash window, another door, and a 16-pane sash window. The first floor has three 19th-century 2-light casements with transoms. Much of the original window glass remains intact.
