Description
Brooke House, now a residential home, is an early 18th-century house located on Galpin Street in Modbury. It is constructed of coursed and squared thin-bedded granite with a rendered gable return on the left and features a steep-pitched hipped slate roof. The building has a symmetrical five-bay front, but due to the steep slope of the site, it presents two storeys on the left and three storeys on the right.
On the lower floor to the right, there is a 20th-century casement window in its original opening and a six-panel door with a hood supported by brackets. The ground and first floors feature 12-pane sash windows with moulded flush architraves and stone cills. The ground floor windows have stone voussoirs and a keystone beneath a plain string course, while the first floor windows are topped with a coved cornice. The central six-panel door is set beneath a square overlight with a radial fanlight, framed by a doorcase with slender Doric half-columns and a full entablature topped with a segmental pediment. This entrance is approached by a flight of eight granite steps with a simple iron rail balustrade and a stepped platform leading to the main street pavement.
At the back of the house, there is a hipped stair turret that has been incorporated into later extensions, along with some UPVC sash windows and two small raking dormers. A small stack is also present. Inside, there is a stick stair with a mahogany handrail that leads through a large elliptical arched opening to a central hall. The top flight of the stair, which leads to the roof space, retains its 18th-century turned balusters. The roof is a simple A-frame design, and there are many good 18th-century panelled doors. The additional bay on the corner of New Street, which is now part of this property, is not considered of special interest.
