Description
No. 45 Galpin Street is an early 19th-century detached house, originally used as a shop or possibly divided into two dwellings. The main block, potentially built in two stages, sits on a steep hillside. It features a central throughway and a small gabled wing to the rear on the left, with a rubble wing to the right. The front of the property has two storeys and three windows. The ground floor includes a square, flat-roofed shop front dating to the 19th century, with a recessed four-panel door and a moulded edge fascia. The shop front’s glazing is in vertical lights with a central mullion. A panelled door leads to the throughway, sheltered under a floating stone cornice supported by consoles. To the right, there’s a canted bay window with a 2:4:2-pane design. The first floor contains three 20-pane sash windows, with the window on the right set lower than the others. The left return exhibits a single light set high within a projecting wall. The right return features two lights, followed by the rubble wing, which has a four-pane sash window above a three-light casement window. Brick gable stacks are present on the front block, while the wing has a rendered eaves stack. The roof is slate, with a decorative ridging. The interior has not been inspected. The building reflects the late 18th and early 19th-century expansion of Galpin Street, which previously served as the primary route through Modbury, before the construction of New Street.
