Description
J A Fox is a house and shop located on Broad Street in Modbury, dating from the mid to late 19th century. The building features a smooth rendered exterior and a slate roof, rising three storeys with three windows. The ground floor showcases an impressive range of display windows arranged in a 1:3:1 - 1:2:1 pattern, set on small stall-board risers with bold mullions and shouldered heads. It includes two set-back part-glazed doors, all beneath a deep plain cantered fascia. To the left, there is a six-panel door topped with a moulded entablature, and at fascia height, a pilaster with diamond raised rustication.
On the first floor, there is a plate glass sash canted oriel with a low hipped roof supported by a moulded cornice, alongside a 4-pane sash window set in an architrave with a wall cill on brackets; the centre bay is plain. The second floor features three similar windows grouped towards the centre. The building has plain pilaster corners with moulded caps, a mid string in the same plane, and box eaves. It is topped with deep gable stacks that have moulded cappings and decorative ridge tiling. The design is restrained yet complete, particularly notable for its richly detailed shop front.
