Description
Nos 1A and 1B on Broad Street are two houses and shops located at a street corner, dating from the mid-19th century. The building features a smooth rendered front that returns as a pilaster on the corner with Brownston Street, and is topped with slate hanging. The roof is slate, hipped to the left, with a small rendered stack on the right.
The front elevation is three storeys high with two windows. The ground floor has two 19th-century shop fronts; No 1A has square bays with six large panes flanking a recessed 20th-century glazed door, while No 1B has a similar square bay and a glazed door, with the mullions featuring small capitals. Both shop fronts are topped by a continuous fascia with a moulded edge.
On the first and second floors, there are 12-pane sash windows set in painted rough stone surrounds. The return elevation to Brownston Street includes 12-pane sashes at both the first and second floors, with 20th-century slate hanging featuring four scalloped edge courses above a rendered ground floor that has a three-light plate glass display front. There is a plinth beneath the front display windows, which slopes down to the pavement on the return. This building is an important visual element at the intersection of the streets.
