Description
Nos. 3, 5, and 5A on Market Street in Malton are two houses that have been converted into three shops. They date from the mid to late 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed from coursed squared stone and feature a moulded brick eaves cornice. There are brick stacks located at the left end and in the center of the pantile roof.
The structure is two stories high with an attic and has a four-window front. A passage entrance in the center has a pilastered doorcase topped with a cornice hood supported by corbels. To the left, there is a shop front with Composite pilasters beneath a deep entablature and cornice, featuring glazed double doors with an overlight next to an arcaded shop window that has five round-arched lights on colonnettes. To the right, there are paired plain pilastered shop fronts that include half-glazed and panelled doors with overlights between plate glass windows, all beneath a continuous fascia and cornice.
On the first floor, at the left end, there is an inserted canted bay window with a 16-pane center sash flanked by two 8-pane sashes. The remaining windows are 12-pane sashes with stone sills and triple keyblock lintels. The building also has four gabled dormers with 2-light, large-pane sliding sashes. At the time of review in 1990, No. 3 was unoccupied.
