Description
40 and 42 Yorkersgate is an inn that has been converted into offices. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone some alterations since then. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone and sits on a plinth. It features a pantile roof with brick stacks at the right end and center, along with a coped right gable and a shaped kneeler. The structure is two stories tall with an attic and has a six-window front.
No. 40 has a recessed six-panel door with an overlight, while No. 42 has a similar door located further left, set within a segmental carriage arch that is now blocked. All windows are 12-pane sashes with stone sills and flat arches made of voussoirs, with keyblocks above the first-floor windows. To the left of the former carriage arch, there is a two-light sliding sash window with a painted timber lintel on the top floor. The attic features two gabled dormers, each with two 4-pane sliding sashes. Until around 1860, this building was known as the White Horse coaching and posting inn.
