Description

The forecourt walls, piers, gates, and railings at the front of York House date from the late 17th century, with 20th-century replacement railings.

The boundary wall stands about 0.5 meters high and features a cambered coping. It is finished at each corner with a square pier that has a moulded cornice and a pyramidal cap. The gate piers are taller and square in shape, with rebated angles and banded rustication, topped with moulded cornices, stepped caps, and ball and pedestal finials. The balls are surrounded by a band of vermiculated rustication. The central pedestrian gate is highly decorative, adorned with rinceaux, scrolls, and reversed wheatear drops, and is topped with alternately twisted and wavy finials. Above the gate is an overthrow that is similarly decorated, featuring intertwined foliage that encloses a 'WS' monogram and the motto 'VINCE MALUM BONO'. The railings on either side of the gateway are similar in style but include a square section open-work column with twisted finials at the center of each side. The railings on the side returns that connect to the house are of a much simpler design, likely modern.
