Description
6 and 8 Market Street are two shops that have been combined into one. They date from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the mid and late 19th century. The building is constructed of painted brick in English garden-wall bond, topped with a pantile roof and featuring end brick stacks. It has two storeys and an attic, with a two-window front.
The ground floor has paired shop fronts that rest on painted brick risers. Both shop fronts are pilastered and feature moulded cornices on grooved console brackets. The right shop front is the older of the two, with a recessed glazed door beneath an overlight and a five-light window with slim glazing bars. The left shop front has a glazed door and overlight, along with a plate-glass window.
On the first floor, the windows are single-pane sashes with painted sills and painted wedge lintels. The building also has iron clamped guttering and an inserted flat dormer on the left side, which contains a large-pane sliding sash window.
