Description
14 and 16 Market Street are two houses that have been converted into one house and one shop. They were built in the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of painted brick in English garden-wall bond, resting on a painted stone plinth, and feature pantile roofs with a brick stack at the right end of each house.
The structure is two stories high with an attic and has a four-window front. On the right, No. 14 has a half-glazed and panelled door, along with a bowed shop window set between plain pilasters topped with a bracketed cornice. This window consists of three segment-headed lights with traceried spandrels between moulded glazing bars, above a fluted sill. On the left, No. 16 features a 20th-century house door beneath an overlight, and a board passage entrance door under a blocked overlight with crossed glazing bars. It also has a three-light bow window similar to that of No. 14, but with altered glazing bars.
The first-floor windows in both houses are single-pane sashes with painted stone sills, set beneath slightly cambered arches. Each house has gabled dormers with two-light sliding sashes; No. 14 has large panes, while No. 16 has six-pane windows. At the time of review in 1990, No. 14 was unoccupied.
