Description
St Michael's House is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The front is made of ashlar stone, while the right side is red brick and the left side is rendered. The rear wing is constructed from rubble stone, partly rendered. The roof is covered with pantiles and features coped gables and shaped kneelers, along with rebuilt brick end stacks.
The building has a central entry plan with a rear wing and stands three storeys high with an attic on a basement plinth, featuring five windows. There are three steps leading up to the front door, which consists of six raised-and-fielded panels with an overlight, set within an architrave. A moulded cornice hood rests on enriched brackets beneath a shallow parapet that is pierced by roundels. On either side of the entrance are bow windows with glazing bars, fitted into the original window openings that have keyed lintels.
At the right end, there is an inserted doorcase with panelled pilasters and a dentil cornice, which contains a four-panel door with an overlight. The windows on the first floor are tall single-pane sashes, while those on the second floor are shorter four-pane sashes. All windows have stone sills supported by block brackets and keyed architraves, with the central window on the first floor featuring a pedimented design with a pulvinated frieze. The building has raised quoins and a raised band on the first floor, which is interrupted in the centre by the doorcase parapet. A flat dormer with a two-light large-pane sliding sash has been inserted in the attic.
Inside, there is a stair hall at the rear with a staircase that rises around a well through the full height of the house. The staircase features an open string, column-on-vase balusters, a ramped-up moulded handrail, and shaped tread ends.
