Description
No. 14 Broad Street is a house in a row, set back from the buildings to the left. It dates from the 18th century or earlier, with 19th century and later modifications to the facade. The building is rendered and has a slate roof. Its steep-pitched roof and set-back position suggest it is an early structure.
The house has two storeys and an attic, featuring two windows. On the ground floor, there is a small 6-pane deep-set sash window, a near-central narrow 6-panel door, and to the far right, a 6-panel fielded door beneath a 19th century stone cornice on consoles, likely indicating a former through-way. The first floor has a 16-pane sash window and a 12-pane sash window, both within architraves, along with two small gabled dormers with 2-light casements. The roof is adorned with decorative ridging, and there is a brick stack on the left, cropped at the level of the ridge of Lloyds Bank.
Historically, a market building stood in the road near this location until 1827, which may explain the set-back of this property and the one next to it. A mid-19th century engraving depicts a regular two-bay front with wide paired doors to the right.
