Description
Sundial Cottage is a house located on Main Street in Yarwell. It dates from the 17th century but was modified in the 19th century. The building is constructed of regularly coursed limestone with ashlar banding and dressings, topped by a Collyweston slate roof. It has a three-unit plan with a rear wing and is a single storey with an attic.
The main front features four bays arranged in a three-window range. The central two bays are made of ashlar and project forward. These projections were originally meant to extend to the roof level to create gabled eaves dormers, but this feature was likely removed in the 19th century. To the right of the centre, there is a 19th-century tripartite sash window that breaks through a moulded stone surround, which was formerly a stone mullion window. Below this window is a chamfered plinth, and above it is a moulded string course. A similar tripartite sash window is located at the far right, also with a moulded stone surround and cornice above. To the far left, there is a 19th-century casement window with a similar surround and cornice. A small single-light window is positioned to the left of centre, with a single-light 19th-century casement window above it, set under the eaves.
To the left of centre, there is a six-panelled door with a moulded stone surround and a four-centred arch-head. Flanking this door are single-light windows with moulded stone surrounds, which are now blocked. The building has a chamfered plinth below and a moulded stone cornice above. There are three hipped eaves dormers with 19th-century casement windows, and the gables feature ashlar parapets as well as ashlar ridge and end stacks. The left gable has an inscribed sundial.
At the rear, there is a projecting wing on the left with 19th-century casement windows, and to the right, there is a 19th-century oven with a hipped roof. Fragments of chamfered masonry are reset in the centre of the range. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have an ogee moulded spine beam in the centre room, featuring a chip carved rosette in the soffit, as well as a plank door with moulded battens and original hinges.
