Description
Forge Cottage is a house and former forge, now a single dwelling, dated 1598 and reconstructed in the 17th and 18th centuries with a 19th-century addition. It is built from squared coursed limestone and brick, topped with Collyweston slate roofs. The original layout consisted of one- and two-unit plans, with part of the building being single storey with an attic and part two storey.
The main house features an irregular three-window range, with a central bay that slightly projects forward. To the left, there is a 19th-century casement window with a moulded stone surround. A single-light window to the left of centre has an ashlar surround, while a casement window with glazing bars to the right is set under a wood lintel, showing evidence of previous alterations. The building has three gabled eaves dormers, each with 19th-century casement windows. The central entrance is a plank door under a wood lintel, and there are double plank doors to the far right, also under wood lintels. The bay at the far right was originally the forge, featuring an ashlar gable parapet and a brick stack at the end.
Attached to the left is a two-storey, one-bay extension that has a stone ground floor and a brick first floor, originally designed as an open carriage arch. A late 19th-century ashlar canted bay window has been added into the carriage arch, with a 20th-century casement window above it. To the right of the extension, there is a plank door with an ashlar surround. A lateral stack is located at the rear of the building.
Inside, the entrance hall features a spine beam inscribed with the date 1598, flanked by fluting. There is a small open fireplace with a bressumer on the rear wall.
