Description

Ballaugh Cottage is a house dated 1591, with alterations made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed of regular coursed limestone and has a Collyweston slate roof. The original plan was likely a two-unit layout. The house is two storeys high and has a two-window front. It features 20th-century PVC casement windows in original openings, each with a wooden lintel; the lintels on the left-hand side have stop-chamfers. A 20th-century lean-to porch is centrally positioned. The ridge and end stacks have been partly rebuilt in stone.

Inside, rooms on either side of the entrance have open fireplaces with bressumers. A room to the right of the entrance contains the remains of a winder stair to the left of the fireplace, and a spine beam with the date 1541 carved into it. The lettering is flanked by fluting and the soffit of the beam features a rosette. The roof structure is of 19th-century design. The cottage is included on the list for its group value.
