Description
Old Cobble Cottage is a house that dates back to the late 17th century. Originally built as a house, it later served as a penny school and stables before becoming a house again. The structure is made of rendered stone rubble and features a cement-washed slate roof with gabled ends. There is a large stone rubble chimney stack at the rear of the left-hand range, with a brick shaft, and another large stone rubble stack on the higher right-hand gable end.
The building's plan has been altered over time. The original entrance was located in the lower left-hand gable end but has since been blocked by the construction of Shute Cottage. The current layout consists of a two-room plan with a single depth, divided by a 20th-century stair.
The cottage is two storeys high with an asymmetrical two-window front. The lower range on the left includes a 20th-century part-glazed porch near the junction with Shute Cottage. To the right, there is a large three-light 20th-century casement window, with another three-light casement above it in a raking dormer. The right-hand range has two storeys and an attic with casement windows.
Inside, the cottage features later chimney pieces in the fireplaces and ceiling beams from the 19th and 20th centuries. The roof timbers in the lower range have chamfered principals, although the full roof structure has not been inspected. In front of the cottage, there is a cobbled yard that maintains a right of way for horse and cart. The site is believed to be the location of a palace or fish cellars, likely to the east.
