Description
Oakcroft is a house that dates back to the late 16th century, later extended to form two cottages, and then converted back into one cottage. It was extended in the early 17th century and remodeled in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of rendered and painted slate-stone rubble, topped with a slate roof featuring gable ends, with the left range having a higher roof. The stone rubble stacks on the gable ends have pots made of vertical slates, which are typical for the Tintagel area.
The left-hand range is likely the original house, consisting of a one-room plan heated by a stack on the left gable end. The entrance is located at the front right, and there is a semi-circular stair turret at the rear. In the early to mid 17th century, a second cottage was added to the right gable end, also with a one-room plan, probably heated by a stack on the right gable end and featuring a rectangular stair turret at the rear. The entrance for this cottage may have been in the right gable end.
The building has two storeys, with the left-hand range set forward. The eaves may have been raised in the early to mid 20th century when part of the roof structure was renewed. The front has a regular three-window arrangement, with two-light casements and a part-glazed 20th-century door to the left, and another two-light casement to the right. The first floor has two-light casements above the ground floor openings. There is a 20th-century extension on the right gable end.
Inside, the ceiling beams have been replaced, and there is a large slate lintel over the fireplace on the left gable end. A thick wall between the two cottages continues up to the apex. The timber treads in the semi-circular stair turret on the rear left and in the rectangular stair turret on the rear right were replaced in the 1970s. The roof structure was not inspected, but the owners indicate that it was replaced in the early to mid 20th century.
