Description
Monks Cottage is a house located in Romaldkirk, likely dating back to the 17th century but with significant alterations made in the 19th century. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a roof where the left section is covered with imitation stone flags and the right section is finished with graduated green slates. It has stone chimneys.
The cottage is two storeys high with four irregular bays, plus a later addition on the right. The second bay contains a replaced glazed door set in a flush surround with top and bottom blocks. There is a blocked doorway in the right bay. The windows have been replaced with sashes and casements in 19th-century openings, including three 12-pane horizontal-sliding sashes above, all set in flush monolithic surrounds. The eaves are raised, and the roof has a coped gable on the left and coping at the junction on the right. There is a ridge stack with a top band and water table, as well as a right end stack with a water table. At the rear, there is a continuous single-storey outshut.
There is also a single-storey range attached to the right return, but this part is not considered of special interest.
