Description
Nos. 2 and 3 The Square is a house, originally two dwellings, likely built in the early 17th century, with a fireplace dated 1626. It has undergone significant alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble and features graduated green slate roofs along with stone and brick chimneys. It is centrally located within a short row of buildings.
The house is two storeys high and has four bays with flush quoins. The 19th-century openings include replaced glazed doors in flush, tooled surrounds at the end bays, and replaced 12-pane casements in similar surrounds between. Above, there are two identical windows and blank end bays. The roof has a replaced coping on the right side. There are three ridge stacks; the central and left stacks are made of stone and have top bands and water tables, while the right stack is a rebuilt brick structure.
Inside, there is a partly-blocked Tudor-arched fireplace with chamfered inner arrises and a lintel dated 1626. There are late 20th-century rear additions that are not of special interest.
