Description

The Rose and Crown Hotel is a hotel dated 1733, as indicated on the doorway frieze, with 19th-century additions at the rear. It is constructed of squared sandstone rubble, featuring stone-flagged roofs and stone chimneys. The building has a reversed U-plan, consisting of a long single-storey rear wing on the left and a shorter two-storey rear wing on the right, with a shallow outshut between the wings.

The hotel has three storeys and four irregular bays, with flush quoins. The doorway located in the second bay is framed by an architrave and a frieze inscribed with "IHM 1733," topped with a cornice. The entrance features a boarded door with strap hinges and an 18th-century lock plate. The windows are mainly replaced 12-pane sashes with flat-arched lintels and flush sills. The roof is adorned with coped gables and shaped kneelers, along with end stacks and one ridge stack that have cornices and water tables.

The rear outshut and wings contain replaced sashes, while the single-storey wing has a tall lateral chimney. There is a late 20th-century addition on the left return that is not of special interest.

Historically, a footpath in front of the hotel forecourt features dark cobbles arranged to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, with "1837" also marked.
