Description

Arkendale Number 5 and the wall to the left are a pair of houses located in Romaldkirk, likely dating from the early 18th century with some alterations and changes to the windows made in the 19th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and feature a stone-flagged roof along with stone chimney stacks.

The structure has two storeys and consists of four bays for No. 5 and three bays for No. 6, with alternating quoins. No. 5, which is on the left, was originally a two-storey, two-bay house with a one-storey, two-bay cottage to the right that was later raised to full height. It has a replaced door in a tooled surround located in the second bay, and mainly features replaced 12-pane sash windows—three on the ground floor and two above. There is a section of quoins above and to the right of the door.

No. 6 has a central replaced door in a flush surround with a blank bay above, flanked by replaced two-pane sash windows. The roof is continuous with coped gables and shaped kneelers, and there are end stacks as well as two ridge stacks that have top bands and water tables.

A short section of wall with a segmental archway connects No. 4 (Monks Cottage) to the left return of No. 5, while the right return of No. 6 features a rough plinth. Additionally, there is a continuous, added two-storey rear outshut.
