Description

ROMALDKIRK THE SQUARE NY 9922 29/180 No.5 and wall to 12/1/67 left; No. 6 (Arkendale) (formerly listed in Group of 8 cottages between Rose and Crown Hotel and Parish Church) II Pair of houses with archway to left. Probably early C18 with C19 alterations and re-fenestration. Coursed sandstone rubble. Stone-flagged roof. Stone chimney stacks.

2 storeys, 4 and 3 bays with alternating quoins. No. 5 to left.

No. 5: originally a 2-storey, 2-bay house with one-storey, 2-bay cottage to right, later raised to full height. Replaced door, in tooled surround, in second bay. Mainly replaced 12-pane sashes: 3 on ground floor and 2 above. Section of quoins above and to right of door.

No. 6: central replaced door, in flush surround, with blank bay above; flanking replaced 2-pane sashes.

Continuous roof with coped gables and shaped kneelers. End stacks and 2 ridge stacks with top bands and water tables.

Short section of wall, with segmental archway, links No. 4 (Monks Cottage,q.v.) to left return of No. 5. Right return of No. 6 has rough plinth.

Continuous, added 2-storey rear outshut.
