Description
Kirkstile is a house located in Romaldkirk, likely built in the early 17th century, with significant alterations and additions made around 1720 and in the 19th century. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble with a rendered front, featuring a stone-flagged roof and stone chimneys.
The house has two storeys and four irregular bays, with the left half being a later addition. There is a 20th-century glazed gabled porch and a replaced door in the third bay. The door surround is chamfered, with a lintel inscribed "AD 1720." The windows have been replaced with sashes in 19th-century openings, and the first-floor left bay is blank. The eaves are raised, and the roof has coped gables and shaped kneelers. There are end stacks with top bands and water tables, and a stepped external chimney on the right return. At the rear, there is an outshut of several builds that includes a 20-pane sash window on the right return.
Inside, there is a thick cross wall to the right of the staircase that was originally external. The sitting room features a chamfered Tudor-arched fireplace with a massive lintel and flanking salt or spice cupboards.
