Description

A pair of houses dating from the 18th century, situated on Kirkgate in Knaresborough. The houses are built of rendered stone with a Westmorland slate roof. They are three storeys high and have a random arrangement of windows, forming an L-shaped plan.

Number 49, on the left, features a narrow boarded door to the right, and a 12-pane unequally-hung sash window to the left of the entrance. The first floor has a 6-pane sash on the right, and the second floor retains a 4-light side-sliding sash window with glazing bars, though the frame was replaced in the 20th century. Number 51, on the right, has a 4-pane door in a flush frame. The second floor of Number 51 has two 8-pane side-sliding sashes. The roof is hipped on the left side and has gable copings on the right. A brick end stack is located on the right, while a large rendered stack crosses the ridge near the left end.

The rear of the houses presents a limestone facade over four storeys. A bay to the right projects as a wing. Quoins are present. The right side has three tiers of canted bay windows with two 6-light sashes to the top floor. The left side has small 20th-century openings and evidence of previously blocked original windows. The rear has a hipped roof.

A garden wall, enclosing the rear garden, is constructed of 18th-century brick on a limestone rubble base, with a crenellated parapet, partly renewed in the 20th century. The wall includes a Gothick arch leading from Gallons steps and incorporates a corner tower or summer house. The property appears somewhat neglected. The interior was not inspected.
