Description
Manor Cottage is a house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with restoration work carried out in 1965. It is constructed of timber and stone, with a cement-rendered exterior and a thatched roof. The house is one-and-a-half storeys high and has three bays, arranged in a lobby-entry plan. A half-glazed door is located to the right of the centre. A small square window is positioned far to the left, and a larger two-light window is in the centre, both featuring 20th-century leaded lights. The roof is gabled, with a ridge stack opposite the front door. The interior retains substantial remains of the original timber-framed structure, including a continuous aisle along the north side (facing the road). A fire in 1965 destroyed the house above tie-beam level. Historical documentation regarding the property can be found in the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Buildings Study Group Report No 227, 1976, and in W A Atkinson’s Knaresborough and its Manor Houses, published in 1924.
