Description

A pair of houses dated to the late 18th century, situated on a steeply sloping site at the top of Water Bag Bank. The houses are constructed of ashlar and have a stone slate roof. They are three storeys high with four windows on the first floor, two of which are blind. A short flight of stone steps leads down to a central pair of doors: a six-panel, part-glazed door on the left (number 53) and a 20th-century half-glazed door on the right (number 55). Flanking these doors are two 20-pane bow windows with shutters. 20-pane sash windows with glazing bars are present on the upper floors. There are two blind windows on the first and second floors, centrally located. Architectural details include incised lintels and projecting sills throughout, with end stacks. The forecourt features railings approximately 80 centimetres high, fixed into a gritstone curb. The railings are closely spaced with bulbous finials and a top rail.
