Description
The Polperro Harbour Museum, formerly known as L'Teglios Fish Cellars, is a late 18th or 19th-century complex of fish cellars, originally used for the fishing industry and now serving as a museum. The building is constructed of stone rubble with corrugated iron and asbestos roofs featuring gable ends. Additional ranges with lean-to corrugated iron roofs extend to the rear.
The cellars are arranged in several rectangular ranges running roughly parallel to the north harbour wall. They are single-storied with a series of timber double doors providing access. The harbour-facing side features single and double plank doors, and originally included a balcony projecting over the harbour wall edge.
Internally, much of the floor is a late 20th-century cement screed. One range retains a timber floor, possibly laid above a drain. At the rear is a salt cellar with a trap door in the roof for top-loading purposes.
The building is included in the register for its group value. Historical records indicate that the first seine was established in Polperro in 1782, with the first export of pilchards occurring in 1783. In the early 19th century, two Italian brothers, the Teglio Brothers, leased a fish store below Pallace Court, which subsequently became known as L'Teglio's Fish Cellar, to export pilchards to Italy.
