Description
Bay Tree Cottage is a house located on the north side of The Warren in Polperro, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of painted stone rubble with an asbestos slate roof and features large stone rubble chimney stacks on the gable ends. The house is built into the side of a hill and has a two-room plan with a central stair hall.
The building has three storeys and a symmetrical two-window front. On the ground floor, there are two 2-light casements with glazing bars flanking a 19th-century six-panelled door with glazed top lights. A slate-hung gabled porch with a slate roof is present. The first floor features 2-light casements with glazing bars, while the second floor has similar 2-light casements with glazing bars and half-dormers with raking roofs.
Inside, there are 19th-century chimney pieces with corbelled brackets. The ceiling beams have bowtell moulding on one corner and a slight chamfer on the other. The upper floors have not been inspected. Access to the house is via stone rubble steps with slate treads, accompanied by a stone rubble retaining wall to the Warren.
