Description

Mark Lybbys Cottage is a house dating to the early 18th century, located on the north side of The Warren in Lansallos, near Polperro. The construction is of stone rubble, now rendered and painted, with a slate roof and gable ends. A large chimney stack of stone rubble is on the right-hand gable. Initially, the house likely comprised two rooms, with an entrance centrally located and the right-hand room heated by the gable end stack. The interior partitions have since been removed, creating a single large room. Alternatively, the property could have originally been two cottages, or been converted into a pair. It is an asymmetrical two-window fronted building of two storeys. The ground floor features a 20th-century window in a blocked entrance on the left, a 20th-century partly glazed stable-type door beneath a slate lean-to hood, and a 20th-century window with glazing bars to the right. Two four-pane sash windows are located on the first floor. The interior has undergone alterations, including a renewed fireplace and 19th-century ceiling beams spaced widely apart. A 20th-century staircase has also been installed. The owners suggest the property may have served as a fish cellar in the past. The building is included on the list for group value.
