Description
Dolphin House is a house located in Lansallos, Polperro, dating from the late 17th century, with an extension added in the late 18th century. The main range was built for Captain Rowett, a sea captain. The building is constructed from rendered and painted stone rubble, using stone quarried from nearby land, and features a slate roof. The lower 17th-century range has gabled ends, while the 18th-century range has hipped ends. There are large projecting stone rubble chimney stacks, with a brick shaft on the lower gable end and a rendered brick chimney stack at the junction of the two ranges.
The late 18th-century section includes two principal rooms and a central entrance hall with stairs at the rear. Attached to the lower left-hand end is a one-room plan range, which is the only remaining part of the original 17th-century house, later remodeled when the late 18th-century range was built.
The late 18th-century part features a three-storey, three-window range on the right, with 12-pane sash windows on the ground and first floors, and smaller two-light casements with glazing bars on the second floor. The sash window on the ground floor right has had its glazing bars removed. There is a central doorway with a 20th-century gabled and glazed porch, along with a second doorway to the right, which originally was a window and now has a 20th-century glazed door. The remodeled 17th-century range to the left is two storeys high with two windows, also featuring 12-pane sashes.
The interior of the house remains intact, with original doors throughout the 18th-century range. Notable features include a decorative ceiling rose in the lower room, 19th-century chimney pieces, and Delft tiles on the higher gable end. The stair has a moulded rail, although the balustrade has been removed. There is a cupboard from the 18th century in the lower room and a chest in the attic where Captain Rowett kept his papers. The roof timbers are boxed in.
