Description

Kayne Cottage is a house dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed from painted and rendered stone rubble and features an asbestos slate roof with gable ends. On the higher gable end, there is a large stone rubble chimney stack, and a further projecting stone rubble chimney stack with a brick shaft that originally served an outshut. Additionally, there is a stone rubble lateral chimney stack with a brick shaft located at the lower end on the Talland Hill elevation.

The house has a two-room and cross-passage plan, likely with a kitchen room at the higher end heated by the end chimney stack, and a parlour at the lower end heated by the rear lateral chimney stack. The outshut, which is heated by the end chimney stack, has been added to the rear (Talland Hill) elevation on the higher gable end, and a reused porch has been added to the front elevation to create a small room.

The building is two storeys high, with an asymmetrical rear elevation on Talland Hill featuring splayed corners. There is a two-storey extension that is hung with asbestos slate and has an entrance in the side wall. The harbour front elevation has a regular two-window front on both storeys. The ground floor includes a 19th-century 12-pane sash window on the left and an early 19th-century timber porch on a stone rubble base on the right, which is reputed to have been brought from The Rectory in Lansallos. This square porch has corner pilasters and an entablature with a deep overhanging cornice. The original central entrance has been blocked, and a side entrance has been inserted, accessed by stone rubble steps. On the first floor, there are two 19th-century 12-pane sashes that break the eaves. The fireplace on the higher gable end features a 20th-century chimney piece.
