Description
Hillside is the end house of a terrace of three, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with slate hanging above the ground floor and features a slate roof with a hipped end and a brick chimney stack. The building is set into the side of a hill, presenting a three-storey elevation that overlooks the harbour and a two-storey elevation with a basement facing Talland Hill. The elevation to Talland Hill is at an obtuse angle to the front walls of the adjoining houses at the higher end.
The house has a two-room double depth plan, with the principal room at the front and a small service room at the rear. An entrance passage on the right leads to a stair across the rear. The front elevation facing the harbour has a single window range over three storeys. The ground floor features a wide early 19th-century 16-pane sash window and a six-panelled door that is partly glazed, framed by an early 19th-century moulded door frame with panelled pilasters and a low stable-type door. The first and second floors have early 19th-century 16-pane sashes without horns and exposed sash boxes.
On the Talland Hill elevation, there is a two-light early 19th-century sliding sash window in the basement, as the ground slopes down to the right. This elevation also includes stanchion bars, a stair window, and early 19th-century 12-pane sashes on the upper floors. The interior remains largely unaltered from the 19th century, showcasing early 19th-century plasterwork.
