Description

Wayside Cottage is a house dating from the early 19th century, located on the north west side of Talland Mill, near Polperro. The construction is of stone rubble, with the front elevation painted. It has a slate roof with gable ends and brick chimney stacks, one of which projects from the left-hand gable. The house has a single-depth plan of two rooms with a cross passage. A further entrance is located on the first floor, accessed from a higher point on the right-hand gable end, due to the rising ground level. The cottage is built into the side of a hill, with the ground also rising to the rear.

Externally, it is three storeys and has a regular two-window façade. The ground floor features a 19th-century two-light casement window with glazing bars to the left, and a four-panel door within an open porch with a slate hood. A 9-pane casement window occupies a blocked entrance, alongside a 19th-century casement window with differing glazing bars on the first floor, incorporating two original 12-pane sashes without horns, set beneath brick segmental arches. Above these are two further 19th-century 12-pane sashes.

The interior contains 19th-century joinery. The exterior of the cottage remains unspoilt and unaltered.
