Description

The Retreat is a house dating from around the mid-19th century, though it may be a refashioning of an earlier structure. It is built of stone rubble, rendered at the rear and left end, and likely originally rendered at the front. The roof is covered with asbestos slate and gabled at both ends, featuring end stacks with chimneypots.

The layout is double depth, with two main rooms at the front and a single-storey lean-to attached to the left end. There is a direct entrance into the central front room, which serves as a stair hall. At one time, the house was divided into two along the long axis.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front. The central entrance features a four-panel front door topped by a rectangular fanlight. The windows are 19th-century casements with two lights and eight panes per light. The ground floor windows have flat stone arches, while the first-floor windows are set below wider, longer timber lintels, suggesting earlier openings. The small garden in front is enclosed by stone rubble walls with tile capping, which rise higher at the gateway and are included in the listing.

Inside, there is a stick baluster stair with a turned newel and notable joinery. This house is part of a group that includes Manor Mill and Millhead Cottage, recognized for its group value.
