Description
Nos 5 and 6 Mill Head is a cottage that dates from the 17th century or earlier and was extended in the 18th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with some cob on the first floor and has an asbestos slate roof that is gabled at both ends. The right end features a projecting stack with set-offs and a stone shaft, while there is a rear left lateral stack, a left end stack, and a lateral stack to the rear wing, which has a half-hipped roof.
The building has a T-shaped plan, with the main range being single depth and three rooms wide. The entrance is located to the right of the center, leading into a stair hall. There is a narrow rear service room that likely post-dates the main range, and a rear left wing that is at right angles to the main range.
The exterior presents an asymmetrical front with four windows and two front doors, one to the right of center and another to the left. The windows are a mix of two and three-light casements with glazing bars.
Inside, 17th-century features can be found in both right-hand rooms, including a chamfered scroll-stopped cross beam and a chamfered lintel above the lateral stack. The joinery in the rear wing and service rooms suggests they were added in the 18th century. The roof has two designs of trusses, with possible evidence of sooting on one type that features trenched purlins, while the other type has cambered collars.
This cottage forms a group with the Retreat and Manor Mill.
