Description
Hartland Mill is a house, originally a mill house, dating to the mid to later 19th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble walls, rendered at the front, with a gable-ended natural slate roof. The chimney stacks are of stone rubble with tall brick shafts featuring recessed panels. The plan is T-shaped, suggesting the rear section likely had a function related to the mill, while the L-shaped front range served as the house. The main entrance is located off a stairhall on the side of the front wing.
The exterior is asymmetrical, featuring a four-window front with a large projecting gable to the left and a smaller gable centrally located on the right-hand range. Both gables have decorative bargeboards. The windows are seemingly original, comprising single-light casements with marginal glazing bars and 2-centred arched heads, except for the two first-floor windows on the right-hand range which have segmental heads. A flat bond is present between the floors on the left-hand gable. An original tiled roof lean-to porch, with an open timber framework of 2-centred arches at the front and right-hand side, sits in the angle between the wings. A 20th-century plank door is positioned on the right side of the projecting gable. A wing extending behind the left-hand gable has three small window openings with dressed stone arches above each floor.
The interior was inaccessible during the survey but may contain good quality 19th-century joinery. This is an attractive, largely unaltered Victorian Gothic building positioned prominently on the roadside.
