Description

Crumpled Cottage is a pair of cottages that have been converted into a shop with a flat above. It dates from the 17th century and is constructed of stone rubble, with some areas painted and the right-hand gable end partly covered in slate. The roof is made of slate and asbestos slate, featuring double gables at the front. There is a cross wing at the rear with gabled ends, and a stone rubble lateral chimney stack on the left side wall topped with a brick shaft. A projecting stone rubble chimney stack is located on the right gable end. The building's plan has been significantly altered, with the ground floor nearly gutted, making it difficult to assess the original layout. The roof timbers have been replaced, and there is a straight joint at the junction of the cross wing and the right-hand projecting gabled wing.

The cottage stands two storeys tall and has an asymmetrical, picturesque three-window front. The ground floor of the left-hand cottage features a 19th-century three-light casement window with fixed lights below in a large rectangular opening, along with a late 19th-century four-panel door to the right. The right-hand cottage has a 20th-century plank door with cover moulds on the left and a simple 12-pane shop window to the right. On the first floor, the left-hand cottage has a four-pane sash window with a slate hood and a small rectangular window to the right. The right-hand cottage also has a four-pane sash window with a slate hood. The right gable end includes a stable-type door and a three-light casement window in the gable end. The interior has been altered, with much of the timber reused.
