Description
Headpost Cottage is a former pair of cottages that have been converted into a single residence. The building likely has origins in the 18th century but was completely remodeled in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble, with the upper storey rendered, and features an asbestos slate roof. The gable ends have stone rubble stacks with tapered cups and offsets, each with a bread oven projection.
Originally, the cottages had a mirror plan layout, with each cottage divided centrally, featuring end-heated rooms and a scullery at the front, along with a straight-run staircase leading to a narrow unheated room towards the center. The central partitions have been removed from both cottages, and the staircase in the left-hand room has also been taken out. The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range.
The symmetrical 19th-century fenestration remains intact, showcasing unusual two-light casements with six small panes above four larger panes in each light, along with similar three-light casements on the ground floor. There is a central two-light window situated between the two cottages. Each cottage has a clay-tiled lean-to porch roof supported by shaped timber brackets, featuring heavy plank doors with narrowly spaced chamfered cover strips and chamfered door surrounds. Additionally, there is a small lean-to structure on the rear left side. Aside from the removal of the partitions and staircase in the left-hand cottage, the 19th-century joinery is largely preserved.
