Description

Head Mill is a mill-house that includes accommodation for the miller, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from unrendered snecked stone rubble and features a slate roof with gable ends. There is a rendered stack located towards the rear left end. The building has a rectangular plan, with the mill wheel positioned at the front of the left-hand long side and an integral miller's house that has a single storey and attic outshut on the right-hand side. Both the mill and the miller's house have entrances on the shorter gabled front.

The structure is two storeys high with an attic storey and has a three-window range. The left end has three-light windows with six panes per light, while the two windows to the right are rectangular leaded lights with fifteen panes each. On the ground floor, there are two three-light casements with six and eight panes per light, both situated to the left of a large undershot wheel, which has an inspection door above it. The right gable end features a boarded gabled sack hoist projection at the top storey with a two-light window containing six panes per light. The first floor has projecting pulley wheels on either side of one three-light window and a two-light window.

The ground floor left end has a plank stable door, and there is a wide stable plank door with a chamfered door surround and a slate leanto porch roof, flanked by a three-light window with six panes per light on the left and a two-light casement with three panes per light on the right. There is also a gabled half dormer at the rear, which was formerly a loading door, and slate leanto porch roofs over two doors at the left gable end.

Inside, the mill machinery is intact, including three sets of grinding stones. This building is a well-preserved example of a mill, complete with its wheel and machinery, and features an integral miller's house that remains largely unaltered.
