Description

Higher Braggamarsh Cottage is a late 17th or early 18th century cottage situated in Burrington. The building is constructed of rendered stone rubble and cob, with a thatched roof featuring gable-end stacks. The left stack is brick, while the right stack is of unrendered stone rubble with offsets and a brick shaft; a slate roof covers the rear outshut. Originally a two-occupancy dwelling divided in the 19th century, it was returned to a single cottage in the 20th. The cottage has a two-room and central cross-passage plan, with a winder staircase originally located in the outshut behind the passage and a later 19th-century staircase inserted in the outshut to the rear of the right-hand room. The two rooms are roughly equal in size; the kitchen is on the right and the parlour, potentially originally unheated, is to the left of the passage. A continuous 1 1/2 storey outshut extends to the rear. The building is two storeys and nearly symmetrical, with a two-window front. The left side has 19th-century windows: a four-light casement with three panes per light on each floor. The right side's windows were replaced in the 20th century with three-light casements. A gabled slate roof covers a central porch, which has a plank inner door with a thin, chamfered surround. Most of the 19th-century fenestration on the rear outshut remains. The interior features intact 19th-century joinery. The left-hand room’s fireplace is 20th century, while the right-hand room’s fireplace is 19th century. A late 17th-century doorway at the rear of the passage has a chamfered surround with prism stops. The roof was not inspected.
